Uppsala Lectures in Business är en serie föreläsningar som sedan 1984 årligen arrangerats av företagsekonomiska institutionen. Årets föreläsare är Bruce Kogut, Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. Professor of Leadership and Ethics, Columbia Business School och Professor of Sociology, Columbia University.

Bruce Kogut is the Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. Professor of Leadership and Ethics at Columbia Business School and Professor in Sociology. He teaches courses on Governance and Solving Social Problems.

His current research focuses on social capital markets and social metrics, governance, and experiments in AI and democracy. Kogut’s research often seeks to analyze social dilemmas, such as the quota percentage needed to tip corporate boards to greater gender diversity or proposing a structured finance approach to increase charitable giving. In cooperation with the former IFMR in Chennai, colleagues and he implemented field surveys of over 500 microfinance operations in India, finding that branches with efficient management practices and high cultures of trust explain the variation in branch productivity. An early adopter of computational social science, he published in the Economic Journal an article using machine learning to detect political bias in economic writings. Most recently his article published in the Review of Economics and Statistics shows that the introduction of AI players into work teams hurt coordination and productivity, using a Mario video game setting.

His research is widely cited and has been published in leading journals in economics, management, sociology, and computer science. His most recent book is The Small Worlds of Corporate Governance, published by MIT Press in 2012. A collection of his past articles, many co-authored with Professor Udo Zander on tacit knowledge, was published by Oxford University Press in 2008 under the title Knowledge, Options, and Institutions. He is currently writing a book on Power and Governance in Revolutionary Times. He has two entries in the IMDb.
